Our door building process in detail.
Selection
It all begins with quality wood. We carefully select our wood from our local vender, Teckton, and it is milled ahead of time.
Acclimation
It is vital to let the wood sit for a few weeks and let it settle before use. We use an atmosphere of 40-60% humidity to stabilize the wood and allow for minimal movement to prevent warping.
Wood
We have narrowed our wood use down to the finest lumber. We typically use alder, white oak, and maple.
Cut
After acclimation and stabilization, we begin the process of cutting the wood to size. Every cut is precise so each door will be perfectly balanced.
Mortise Tenon Joint
We use mortise tenon because it is one of the strongest and most appealing woodwork joints and because of its flush fitting design. These joints maintain structural integrity no matter the climate.
Glass
Our glass comes from our local vender, Miller Glass, and we strictly select double-paned and tempered safety glass. We offer privacy glass options that include: fogged, rain, etched, and reeded.
Panels
We design our detailed wood panels as “floating panels.” This allows the panel to move with humidity and temperature, without splitting the wood and without breaking its seal.
Glue
We use waterproof glue for all of our joints. Our glue passes ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance specification and offers superior bond strength.
Finish
Our doors are stained with many color options on hand, as well as custom colors upon request. Once stained we apply 4 coats of premium grade marine varnish that will protect the door from the elements as well as seal the wood for minimal movement throughout its life.

Veneered vs. Solid
We choose to use solid wood because of its higher quality and durability. See below for more information on the differences between veneered and solid.
Veneer is technically a thin layer or skin of hardwood, usually thinner than 1/8 of an inch. Typically, veneer is bonded, or glued with adhesive, to a cheaper surface that is hidden below. Many doors will have a pine core and then a thin layer of veneer. These doors are usually very light and carry a low fire retardant rating. Additionally, veneered doors can rarely be repaired and usually must be replaced if an issue arrises. The advantage to veneered is that it’s very cheap and allows makers to design pieces at a much lower cost.
Solid Wood is exactly how it sounds. Completely solid wood. Solid wood can be sanded, stained, varnished, treated, painted and offers far more customization than veneered. Hardwood, or solid wood, doors are also much heavier, more durable and provide a much better fire rating. We love the look and feel of solid wood and believe this is the best choice when it comes to woodworking and door-making.
